Silver linings: beyond the silos
The Northern Territory (NT) of Australia is a geographically vast jurisdiction with a small, dispersed population. We have a rich multicultural community from across the globe, and around 30 per cent of our population are Aboriginal people. The majority of the NT’s Aboriginal people, around 70 per cent, live in tiny, isolated communities and speak many local languages in addition to English.
Managing the NT’s response to COVID-19 will be discussed through the lens of meeting people’s most basic needs wherever they are. How do you deliver education when teachers and students are worried about food supply? How do you support community and staff wellbeing when travel into and out of remote communities is no longer possible? How do you ensure the delivery of produce when the borders close? How do you harvest food when your usual workforce is not available? How do you meet the essential health needs of vulnerable people when you can’t be with them? What happens to the population, and the economy, when it relies on intrastate and international migration? What perspectives about “managing the crisis” can be gleaned from Aboriginal people in remote places? How do we support the safety and well being of front-line and behind-the-scenes public sector employees involved in responding to and managing a crisis that has no end date?
Reaching out and collaborating beyond the traditional silos of government service delivery and doing things differently has been part of the answer. Tune in or turn up to hear a range of perspectives and participate in a live panel discussion of public sector professionals, academics, and people from the non-government sector. You will come away with insights on success factors, and be able to explore how we can continue working together to meet future challenges.
Supported by the Commissioner for Public Employment, Northern Territory Government, and Charles Darwin University, this event is an open event to interested individuals and organisations to showcase and share the Northern Territory’s experience responding to COVID-19.
